View MoreBetter visibility: LED displays offer enhanced visibility and higher contrast ratios, making them easier to read and view from a distance, even in bright or outdoor environments. They have higher brightness levels and are less susceptible to glare and reflection making them more vibrant overall.
Quality of image
The pixel pitch of an LED screen is Pixel pitches range from 0.9 – 16mm, while the pixel pitch of an LCD screen is Pixel pitches between 0.5 – 0.6mm. LEDs are better for medium to long viewing distances in indoor and outdoor applications, while LCDs are better for close viewing in indoor or nighttime applications only.
Size
The location of your digital signage and the size of display needed should be significant considerations when choosing the right screen(s) for your business.
LCD screens are typically smaller than LEDs, which means they’re less suitable for big video walls. LEDs can be as large as you need.
LCDs also have a disadvantage when it comes to tiling, as there are gaps or lines, which isn’t the case with LEDs.
Energy efficiency:
LED displays are more energy-efficient than LCD displays, as they use less power to generate the same level of brightness in typical use (only the pixels that need to be lit are provided with power). LEDs consume less power, resulting in lower electricity costs and reduced environmental impact.
1, LED displays are typically more expensive upfront compared to LCD displays. With higher pixel pitches, the price evens up a bit more. But that’s just the initial cost.
LCD cannot be repaired by a modular approach if damaged, but instead the whole display must be replaced.
2, LED displays have a longer lifespan compared to LCD displays. They can last up to 100,000 hours or more, while LCD displays typically have a lifespan of 50,000 hours or less. LED is also more easily repaired, with modules being replaced on site by a single engineer and fixed off-site. This means longer service life and lower overall costs over time.
3, LCDs also need regular maintenance to calibrate the displays, so they match, as most often they are running 24/7. Expert technicians will need to color calibrate to match the color and brightness of each screen. This will add to your annual cost of usage. LEDs, on the other hand, don’t typically need any type of attention for several years.
1, LED video walls generate twice the brightness of LCDs, standing out in daylight. While they only need a fraction of that daytime brightness to be seen at night. The brightest LCD wall, by contrast, is only 800lumens.
2, LED displays are becoming increasingly popular due to their superior image quality and energy efficiency. This trend is particularly noticeable in commercial and public spaces with large-scale digital signage and video walls.
3, These advanced seamless LED displays allow businesses across industries to improve customer experience, streamline communication, and increase revenue opportunities.
LED or LCD?
Ultimately, the choice between LCD and LED for digital signage will depend on the purpose of the project, the initial budget available, and the environment you plan to incorporate the installation in.
1, In cases where a viewer will be face to face or extremely close to the screen, a 4K LCD may be the better option. However, fine pitch LED is making a case for close viewings.
2, LEDs right now aren’t designed to be touched displays, but this is changing.
3, Is seamlessness critical? If so, you’ll only get this effect from direct view LEDs.
4, Outdoor or strong light environment: If you plan to use the display outdoors or indoors in a place with very bright light (such as shopping malls, exhibition halls, etc.), an LED display would be a better choice.
5, If you have a specific shape in mind that’s not a rectangle, then LEDs provide you this flexibility.
6, Budget:
Cost considerations: LED displays are generally more expensive than LCD displays, especially in large-screen applications. Therefore, budget can be an important deciding factor.
Long-term cost: While the initial purchase cost of an LED display may be higher, the long-term cost is likely to be lower considering its generally longer lifespan and lower energy consumption.
In the end, LED Signage and LED screens are powerful tools for companies and organizations that want to communicate with their target audiences.
